Join Dr Michael McMillan to explore radical bookshops through Bogle-L’Ouverture Publications, Walter Rodney Bookshop and Centerprise. Dr Michael McMillan is a British playwright, artist/curator and educator, born in England to parents who were migrants from St Vincent and the Grenadines. He worked at Centerprise in Hackney during the 1980s and is the author of several plays, and as an artist is best known for his first installation, The West Indian Front Room, which was exhibited with great success in 2005, attracting more than 35,000 visitors in its initial outing at the Geffrye Museum, and going on to inspire a BBC Four documentary Tales from the Front Room (2007).

Okay so the UCL Institute of the Americas promotes, coordinates and provides a focus for research and postgraduate teaching on the Americas. In November this very interesting and poignantly titled event examines the credibility of historians who currently claim that the atrocities committed by the slavers were more common than what we have thought thus far. It also raises the question of why the slavers would sacrifice whom they hoped to sell upon their arrival in Cuba. This case also highlights the questionable impartiality of Jamaican magistrates, courts and authorities at the time that coincided with the final emancipation of the slaves in the British West Indies, and the paper discusses the weight and credibility given to testimonies received from African slaves, most of whom in this case were children.

Key issues addressed by AFRUCA Mental Health service including Female Genital Mutilation, the Branding of Children as Witches as well as the use of juju and oath rituals to control victims of Trafficking and Exploitation will be explored. Join the historian Onyeka who uncovers fascinating information on the ‘thin black line’ of World War I. 2016 marks 100 years since the start of the Battles of the Somme – the bloodiest series of battles fought during World War I that saw approximately 1.2 million soldiers lose their lives. Historians have begun to uncover the stories of soldiers of African descent who took part in the Battles of the Somme and many other campaigns during the war. What is often not understood is that people of African descent from all over the world fought for both sides. Men, who were blighted by combating oppression and bowed by colonial regimes, broke their backs to work and fight in the war.
Their contribution to the war would have significant effects on the course of the 20th century and the future of colonialism.

Great South African Community Event here! This campaign is in partnership with South African Chamber of Commerce UK, The South African, Sable International, Philip Gamble & Partners, and the South African Diaspora United (www.sadiaspora.org.uk). The campaign is also kindly supported and promoted by Democratic Alliance Abroad UK.
Through a public petition and media campaign we will seek to demonstrate the demand for the return of visa-free travel for South Africans and encourage both Governments to re-engage in efforts to deliver on this issue which affects thousands each year.

Mohamed Gueye is a West African percussionist based in London. Born into a large griot family of drummers from Dakar in Senegal, Mohamed learnt the Sabar and Djembe drum with his family from the age of 5 and has been playing professionally since the age of 15. Passed down to him by his ancestors, Mohamed has a detailed understanding of Sabar rhythms and the history of Senegalese culture. Alongside this Mohamed has had a long love affair with the Djembe drum and is highly sought after for his explosive performances and patient teaching. He has performed at festivals across the UK including Womad, African Drum Village, Drum Camp, Africa Oye and BEATS Cornwall with African stars such as Baaba Maal, Carlou D, Aida Samb and Africa Express.

To celebrate the British Library (BL) Labs Competition project of 2016, ‘Black Abolitionist Performances and their Presence in Britain’ by Hannah-Rose Murray, BL Labs and Hannah-Rose are hosting a walking tour and a short performance on Saturday 26th November 2016.
The ‘Black Abolitionist’ project involves the harnessing of machine learning in order to search the British Library’s digitised newspaper collections to access black abolitionist speeches and performances that have never been discovered before. The project stems from Hannah-Rose’s PhD project, which focuses on African Americans in Britain during the nineteenth century and the myriad ways they resisted British racism.

The evening will start with a live acoustic music set from singer songwriter James Flett and dj Kitchen Tubby will be entertaining us on the decks. This is a benefit to raise money for the charities that have been working in the refugee camp in Calais. The camp might have been bulldozed by the time of the benefit but the need for help and support will be even greater.
