1) Oil Facility Construction Plan Review

An oil company is just about to start construction on a new tank farm and pipelines in Nigeria. They are looking for an experienced construction professional to evaluate proposals from construction vendors and assess whether the construction schedules, manpower histograms and overall planning can be improved. Must be experienced in onshore oil facility construction in remote locations, with specific experience of Nigerian Norms and Factors such as productivity for skilled and un-skilled labour in the country.

Candidate has to review the construction proposals from a 3rd party and comment on whether they should be altered. This should be delivered in a brief report and presentation. The major concern is whether an additional construction camp needs to be built, and the report should identify ways to mitigate this.

We require some time to be spent in our office South West of London for a kick off meeting, data gathering and to present results, but the rest of the time can be spent remotely, We expect work will be full time for the first two weeks to produce the report, then part time afterwards to answer any comments that we have.

The postholder is expected to carry out social epidemiological and demographic research in one or more of the project’s locations (South Africa, Ghana and Malawi), work with colleagues there and to make use of large data sets and other relevant material, according to a defined research plan.

This post is funded for two years in the first instance by the Wellcome Trust under an Investigator Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences held by Professor Megan Vaughan.

The UCL Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) provides an environment organised by issues of global significance and themes of cross-disciplinary interest, and houses existing and new research centres (see: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/institute-of-advanced-studies).

Key Requirements:

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline including social demography, social epidemiology or medical statistics and an understanding of population dynamics in relation to epidemiological change. Project Description Several trypanosome species are pathogens of humans and livestock in sub-Saharan Africa. Successful infection and transmission relies on the ability of the trypanosome to detect, interact with, and adapt to its environment. As extracellular parasites, the trypanosome cell surface acts as the molecular interface between the parasite and its external environment and functions in nutrient acquisition, signalling, and countering host innate and adaptive immune attack.While the major surface protein, the Variant Surface Glycoprotein (VSG), has been well characterised, considerably less is known about the non-VSG proteins on the trypanosome cell surface. Further, the protein composition at the trypanosome cell surface varies between species.This project will involve the characterisation of novel bloodstream-stage Trypanosoma congolense-specific surface proteins that are hypothesised to play a role in host-parasite interactions. This work will inform how different trypanosome species are able to interact with their range of mammalian hosts through non-VSG surface proteins and how those interactions evolved.This project is suitable for a candidate with an Honours Bachelors Degree (Minimum Class 2.1), or equivalent, in a relevant biological subject. A Masters degree, or equivalent experience, would be advantageous. The candidate should have an interest in molecular parasitology.

Funding NotesThis is a BBSRC DTP Programme 4-Year Targeted PhD studentship (Research Theme: Agriculture and Food Security). The student must complete the programme in 48 months, commencing in October 2018. They will be part of an interdisciplinary cohort of students participating in DTP training courses and events. In addition to the primary PhD research, the student will complete two 10-week rotation projects (one in the MacGregor group) and a three-month internship.The studentship will cover a stipend at the standard Research Council rate (£14,553 per annum for 2017/18), research costs and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and is available for UK and EEA students who meet the UK residency requirements.
