2) AMERICAN CULTURE STANDS TRIAL

(Early Feb 2017 Event, But Still…)

Black, what a strange term, an identifier that focuses solely on colour but says nothing of it’s historical roots. A colour that has been easy to appropriate into something trendy, something to boast about, or as Lionel Higgins put it “a lifestyle standard made of assumptions about black identity” that’s used by marketers, studio heads, fashion brands and music labels to make money” (Simien, 2014). To be black means to act according to a set of norms determined by middle aged Caucasians from the land of the not so free, from the corporate machines who apply the mechanisms of globalisation?

Join the Centre Pan-African Thought for another intriguing debate, and determine as this house would submit, we do away with this commercialised subculture filled with an artificial knowledge of self?

3) LIGHTS, CAMERA, NO ACTION? – THE REPRESENTATION OF BLACK WOMEN IN BRITISH MEDIA

For Women Of Colour was launched in 2015. Being second generation in the UK, organisation director – Leonia felt there was a need for a new platform that allowed Black British girls and women of her generation to interact and share their experiences away from their computer screens. Lights, Camera, No Action? – The Representation of Black Women in British Media, is the first of three panel discussions in their “Let’s Talk About” series. The event will bring together a host of women who work in media from writers, to online content creators, singers, journalists and more for a day of honest discussion, lessons and networking.

FWOC will lift the lid on what it is really like to be a young black woman trying to make it into a variety of professions within the media industry. They will also be discussing the support or lack of support shown by the men in our community, try to understand why Black British culture profits everyone but the Black British woman and more!

8) POETRY TRANSLATION WORKSHOPS : JAN 2017 – MARCH 2017

The Poetry Translation Centre has been running poetry translation workshops for over ten years, bringing together poets, translators and enthusiasts to uncover poets from around the world and bring their work into English. To date they have translated 440 poems from 28 languages. PTC translate contemporary poetry from Africa, Asia and Latin America to a high literary standard by pairing poets with translators and through our unique poetry translation workshops.

This next season of Poetry Translation Workshops starts in January and they’d love you to join them. They will be working with a mix of new and returning translators on poems from China, Iran, Kenya, Cuba, Thailand and India. Award winning UK poet Clare Pollard will be returning as facilitator for this season.

10) NIGERIA AGRICULTURE: POTATOES & FRENCH FRIES

$200Million plus flows out of the Nigerian economy in pursuit of potato chips to be imported into the country yearly. Like the billionaire investor Warren Buffet likes to quote: when the tide goes out you soon discover who has been swimming naked.

Early part of 2016, this made the headliness, KFC runs out of french fries in Nigeria. Note that this situation here is only the tip of the iceberg. GroExpo is a forward thinking private equity group servicing the financial needs of its numerous individual and business partners across the different industries they operate. This month; they are hosting this session that give insight into Nigeria’s potato industry. They have identified that the potato value chain is impressive and there is an opportunity to capitalise. So they engaged in a succesful proof of concept and they are now looking to scale up but first figured it would be wise to share our story and expose others to the space and opportunity.

The figures have increased from just under 1.15 million residents in 2001, or 2 per cent of the population, to just over 1.9 million in 2011.

So what does Brexit mean to the community and how would it affect the community?

27) Patrick McAuslan Lecture 2017 from Justice D Moseneke

Rule of Law, Social Justice and Education – the crisis of the social transition from apartheid to democracy

Judge Moseneke is distinguished for his commitment to the rule of law, social justice, democracy and accessible education. The judge’s link to access to education is poignant. He was educated while serving a prison sentence on Robben Island, together with his friend Nelson Mandela, for opposing Apartheid. Judge Moseneke has served in South Africa’s Constitutional Court, both as the Court’s Deputy Chief Justice and Acting Chief Justice. 2017 marks 25 years since the establishment of the Birkbeck School of Law, an institution with a mission to combine excellence in teaching and research, with access to education. To mark this milestone the School’s Annual Patrick MacAuslan Lecture on January 20th 2017 will be given by the eminent South African judge Dikgang Moseneke. Judge Moseneke will lecture on Rule of Law, Social Justice and Education – the crisis of the social transition from apartheid to democracy.

The Middle East Centre builds on LSE’s long engagement with the Middle East and North Africa and provides a central hub for the wide range of research on the region carried out at LSE.

Focusing on resource-scarce economies, Ferdinand Eibl summarises his recent findings on the effects of cronyism on firm performance and economic growth. He uses trade liberalisation in late-Mubarak Egypt as a case study to demonstrate that cronies have not only been passive beneficiaries of economic policies; rather, their preferential access to power has allowed them to actively shape trade liberalisation in their favour.

36) WATOTO CHILDREN’S CHOIR IN ‘SIGNS & WONDERS’

Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled extensively since 1994, sharing a message of hope for Africa’s orphans and widows. To date, the choir has toured six continents and performed to enthralled audiences in schools, retirement homes, churches, parliaments, state houses and royal palaces.

The Choir is comprised of 18 children and 10 adults from Uganda. Each child in the Watoto Children’s Choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents and now lives in a Watoto village.

37) HEALTH ORGANISATION INITIATIVE – UNVEILING OF A NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION FOR BME FAITH GROUPS

This is a new health awareness initiative designed by Food for Purpose.

It is part of an overall nutrition and well being platform, to reach BME faith groups called the Healthy Organisation Initiative. The six week pilot, which involved the recruitment of 27 adults; was held at a local, predominantly African Christian group in South East London. This Dietitian led project is unique in its content, delivery, cultural appreciation and embracement of the ‘faith environment’ as part of the motivation to make healthy changes. The results are both interesting and compelling. There is a strong indication, that delivering such programmes in a ‘faith environment;’ as part of the worship services & meetings in a familiar, safe environment— can successfully promote lifestyle changes, which can in turn improve, sustain and impact health in BME faith groups.

40) SUDAN AT A CROSSROAD: A ROLE FOR DIASPORA IN INCLUSIVE PEACE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Sudanese diasporic community is relatively large and has a significant impact on Sudan development on account of the size and volume of financial remittances. However diasporic contribution is largely neglected within national sustainable development policy and strategies in Sudan. Therefore the main aim of this debate is to ensure Sudan is benefiting from its Diaspora towards inclusive peace and sustainable development in the country and to ensure the Sudanese Diaspora are directly involved with regard to the objectives and desired outcomes of any policy, and the best means of achieving them in Sudan.

41) GEOSCIENCE & GEOPRESSURE: COMBINING THE KNOWNS & UNKNOWNS IN PREDICTION

This seminar will explore, through several case studies drawn from global examples of challenging areas for pressure prediction, how careful and systematic analysis of geoscience data can help to deliver valuable pressure prediction for safe drilling. Included in the seminar will be reference to a blow-out in the late-stage development of an oilfield in SE Asia, the premature abandonment of wells on the West African margin, a mud volcano in Java, and why the Chalk in the Central North Sea is a prediction nightmare!
