Here we go again! April is around and it is probably the busiest month African-orientated socials, supperclubs, networking and film nights throughout the Calendar. 2) Boko Haram Crisis & National Unity/Security in Nigeria

We are pleased to have Lt General Buratai, the current Chief of Army Staff for Nigeria, whose imminent visit to the UK will see him deliver a talk, addressing professors, and students on the issue of the Boko Haram insurgency, governance, terrorism and national unity. This talk is being organised by the African Society of Cambridge University (ASCU) and Cambridge University Nigerian Society (CUNS).

3) Moolaadé

Rebel With a Camera: The Cinema of Ousmane Sembène

Ousmane Sembène, otherwise known as the father of African cinema, is one of the key figures of world cinema, and yet his works—still relevant today—remain unknown to many. Through this programme we will explore his work through the new and highly acclaimed documentary SEMBÈNE!, capturing the life of this prolific filmmaker. This will be screened alongside three of Sembène’s films explored in the documentary: Xala, Moolaadéand Black Girl, each of which was in itself a key and groundbreaking work of world cinema.

The programme is coordinated in collaboration with Aya Distribution with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from The National Lottery.

5) Book Launch: FREEDOM OF THE PHOENIX

Freedom of the Phoenix is a poetry book written by Chantelle Baker, who took her experiece with domestic violence and used spoken words to illustrate the different emotions she had to overcome to become the woman she is now.

“A woman is more likely to be killed by a male partner (or former partner) than any other person. About 4,000 women die each year due to domestic violence. Of the total domestic violence homicides, about 75% of the victims were killed as they attempted to leave the relationship or after the relationship had ended.”

On March 31st we celebrate the essence of LIFE with her book, to those who have gone through it and survived, to the families who sadly have to grieve each day with the loss of a relative to domestic violence.

The book launch is a strictly themed Masquerade Ball. The night consists of three segments:

6) BUILT FOR AFRICA: AFRICAN SOLUTIONS TO AFRICAN ISSUES?

The London School of Economics (LSE) Africa Summit is an annual two-day conference that showcases Africa’s contributions to the world. The summit is a platform to engage and explore cutting edge research and business trends across Africa’s rapidly changing socio-economic environment. Now in its fourth year, the summit has welcomed head of states, senior government officials, leading entrepreneurs, and researchers from across Africa and its diaspora. The summit will be held on March 31st and April 1st 2017 focused on the theme, “Built for Africa: African Solutions to African Issues”. 16) Lerato’s African Easter Brunch (Plantains & Shakshuka)

Lerato will feast on foods from across Africa, inspired by Easter and the season of Lent. As lenten comes from Old English meaning the arrival of the spring season, she will welcome this time of new life and rebirth with bountiful fruits, vegetables, legumes served alongside a special recipe of plantains cooked in shakshuka marrying West African native produce with this much-loved North African dish.

Fasting and feasting is an Easter tradition and in true African style, we will feast on a selection of sharing plates inspired by my African heritage using traditional foods and spices complemented by ingredients from local British farms as seen in my Guardian Nigeria food columns and my recipes contributed to the BBC.

18) African Diaspora Biotech Summit 2017

The African Diaspora Biotech Summit 2017 is a flagship initiative of JR Biotek Foundation. It was developed to inspire early-career life science and biotech professionals (including research scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs, policy experts, and present and future bio-industry leaders) from Africa and the diaspora to help find practical solutions that will contribute to Africa’s sustainable development.

The Summit will bring together, 70 students and early-/mid-career life science and biotech professionals (including research scientists, entrepreneurs, policy experts, and bio-industry leaders) from Africa and the diaspora to discuss the current state of Africa’s biotech industry. Our goal is to create a unique platform for Africa’s future leaders and key stakeholders, especially those in the diaspora, to better understand the challenges and opportunities in Africa’s biotech and life science sector, and how they may be involved in finding practical solutions that will help build the continent’s bioeconomy.

19) Reporting Ethiopia – 2007-2009

Elizabeth Blunt had a long career in the BBC, and has reported from both Africa and South Asia for World Service radio, receiving an MBE for her part in BBC coverage of the Liberian Civil War. In 2007, after officially retiring, she returned to work in Ethiopia where she served for two years as the Corporation’s reporter in Addis Ababa.

Her two years there saw few dramatic political developments, although the consequences of the events of 2005 were still being played out. But she was lucky enough to be able to report on the Ethiopian Millennium, the end of the rift with Pope Shenouda, and an Oromo coronation, as well as topics ranging from cross border raiding in South Omo to Tigrean embroiderers with a nice line in replica Welsh Quilts.

Being a journalist in Ethiopia has never been easy, and has undoubtedly got harder since she left, but the rewards are great, and her time there left Elizabeth with some vivid memories which she will share with us in this talk.

THURSDAY 6th APRIL

20) LindyHopEastLdn: Lindy Hop and Solo A.V.Jazz dance classes at Chats Palace

Lindy Hop (or Swing Dance as it is now known), is a partner dance originating in the late 1920s Jazz Era. In the most part developed in ballrooms across the USA – most notably The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York. It’s popularity peaked in the mid-1940s and was featured often as a speciality act in many Hollywood movies such as Hellzapoppin’. Despite a musical shift after WW2, the Lindy Hop continued to be enjoyed socially throughout the US, UK and other countries. Notable dancers: George Snowdon, Norma Miller and Frankie Manning.

American Vernacular Jazz (sometimes known as Solo or Authentic Jazz) as with most Jazz Dance forms, has its roots in the African dance diaspora. Generally associated with the Lindy Hop, possessing elements of the Charleston, it has taken on its own identity and widely practised today. AVJazz shows itself in House, Hip Hop and similar modern street dance forms. A great example can be seen in the music video That’s It!. Notable dancers Katherine Dunham, Al Minns and Leon James and Chazz Young.

Fantastic! A newbie on our entry list. Check these guys out! This Supper Club event will take place at various venues in London. 29) Research Your African Ancestry

Amazing Initiative here! Ancestry Talks’ wish is to deliver enjoyable Black ancestry and Black history fused talks/socials. You decide whether just to listen, interact socially or both. Our audiences are keen to develop a love of heritage that will last a lifetime.

Paul Crooks is Black Britain’s trailblazing expert in tracing African-Caribbean family history. In 1990, he was told that it would be impossible to trace records of slave-ownership let alone his African ancestors enslaved on plantations in Jamaica. Undeterred, he embarked on a journey of discovery that led from suburban North London to Jamaica and ultimately back to the Gold Coast of Africa.

Paul’s novel and guide to tracing to tracing Black ancestry unlocked sources for researching slave ownership and Black British family history. Subsequent speaking engagements, an appearance on ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ and national radio interviews, inspired a generation of to start exploring legacies of Britain’s slave ownership.

Ashton Moore aka Mighty Tiger in 1992 pioneered the establishment of the now popular one and only London Calypso Tent in the UK produced byThe Association of British Calypsonians of which he was the President, Tiger as he is popularly called started singing calypso as a teenager and performed at the Southern Brigade, Revue Calypso and Victory Tents in Trinidad prior to emigrating to Britain.

A multiple winner of the UK Calypso Monarch, Tiger was an ardent Carnivalist that served on different manifestations of the Notting Hill Carnival Boards. He joined the ancestors in February 2017 but The Mighty Tiger Lives through his music, his work and commitment that ensured calypso music is now enshrined in the culural landscape of Britain, The ABC and its supporters invite you to celebrate his legacy.

Inky Cuttlefish Studios set up in 2007 and have since worked in partnership and with a variety of high profile artists, charities, organisations and groups in our local community, London, Berlin and South Africa. 49) QUESTIONABLE: African History in the British School Curriculum – Roundtable Discussion

African history taught in British classrooms today centres on slavery, and the humanitarian aid that western countries send to Africa – the typical ‘single story’ of Africa. When the teaching of African history within the context of Black history begins and end with slavery, it ignores the humanity of black people. In light of this, the National Institute for African Studies (NIAS) is organising a debate & round table discussion on Weds 19th of April @ 6:30pm, where the consequences of the current approaches to teaching African history within British school curriculum will be discussed.

“To address the limited nature of African/Black history taught within British schools. NIAS is proposing to commission a five series booklet, detailing the roles and accounts of five specific ancient African civilisations – prior to contact with the Atlantic slave trade and European colonisation accounts. 50) African Pattern – Lino Printmaking Workshop

Suitable for beginners/improvers

In this 2.5 hours course, you will explore the traditional art of block printing. This form of print can be translated onto many surfaces. In this workshop you will use the wide range of artist books, african fabrics and reference images to come up with a concept for your very own African pattern.

Under the expert guidance of your teacher, Antonietta Torsiello, you will transfer and carve your hand drawn design onto a lino block and create a stunning lino print to take home with you after the class. Antonietta by the way is an award winning visual and textile artist of Jamaican and Italian heritage raised in East London, UK! Mediums she works with include silk screen, lino print, etching, acrylic, watercolour, drawing ink, oil pastel, lentils, seeds and soil. Her work discusses the complex relationship between texture, nature, cultural traditions, emotion and her own personal experiences.

Lino printing is an extremely popular form of printmaking, used by many professional artists. Although this is now the case, for a long time lino printing was held in low esteem by the art world, until a certain Pablo Picasso made a series of lino prints in the 1950s. That saw the start of a trend that still flourishes today. And long may this continue!

53) StringFEST: Tunde Jegede- Kora/ Cello / Zayn Mohammed – Guitar / Oud

Sama Arts Network is one of the UK’s oldest and most influential arts organisations in the genre of traditional and contemporary South Asian arts. It also presents Orchestral, Jazz and World Music. In this concert titled: ‘Testimony’ will be spearheaded by Tunde Jegede and aims to trace the musical voyage from Bach and the Baroque to medieval Mali, to his own contemporary compositions.

It’s a highly original show and the imagery gives a sense of these worlds both culturally and historically. Tunde Jegede’s music is at once an intimate and personal reflection and also a cultural expression that transcends boundaries. It is a meditative journey that touches on the essence of our being, through sound and image. This concert is a testament to Tunde’s universal appeal and shows once again that he never shies away from challenging the boundaries of music.

54) Tracing Black Ancestry: Secrets of the 1817 Slave Registers Uncovered

Come and ask questions about how to start exploring family history! Paul Crooks was told that it would be impossible to trace records of slave-ownership let alone his African ancestors enslaved on plantations in Jamaica. “No one had tried because such records did not exist.” In the 1990’s, undeterred, he embarked on a journey of discovery that led from suburban North London to Jamaica and ultimately back to the Gold Coast of Africa; an effort that has brought him international recognition for his breakthroughs in African Caribbean genealogy research.

By 1999, Paul had uncovered the potential of the National Archives 1817 Slave Registers and the 1834 Slave Compensation registers for researching Caribbean Ancestry and African Roots. Paul’s revelations preceded a flurry of inquiries into the slave registers and slave compensation records.

It is 10 years since Jihan El Tahari’s seminal film Cuba: An African Odyssey, was made. A painstaking researched and crafted documentary packed with archive footage of this crucial period of struggle for independence from colonial powers, in the history of the African continent and its diaspora. The context is the cold war era of international politics. African revolutionaries call on Cuban guerrillas to help them in their struggle, and Fidel Castro’s men will play a central role on the continent.

June Givanni Pan African Archive and MayDay Rooms will be screening this film in the presence of the director who will introduce the film and discuss it with us all afterwards.

Organisers of the UK’s biggest African and Caribbean food competitions spent 6 weeks last November to December discovering some of the best cooks and bakers championing traditional African and Caribbean cuisine. Producers of the food competition will be providing a lavish evening with live music and entertainment. They are also planning to provide a traditional 3-course meal for guests and contestants along with a vegan option.

Freedom of the Phoenix is a poetry book written by Chantelle Baker, who took her experiece with domestic violence and used spoken words to illustrate the different emotions she had to overcome to become the woman she is now.

“A woman is more likely to be killed by a male partner (or former partner) than any other person. About 4,000 women die each year due to domestic violence. Of the total domestic violence homicides, about 75% of the victims were killed as they attempted to leave the relationship or after the relationship had ended.”

Her two years there saw few dramatic political developments, although the consequences of the events of 2005 were still being played out. But she was lucky enough to be able to report on the Ethiopian Millennium, the end of the rift with Pope Shenouda, and an Oromo coronation, as well as topics ranging from cross border raiding in South Omo to Tigrean embroiderers with a nice line in replica Welsh Quilts.

Being a journalist in Ethiopia has never been easy, and has undoubtedly got harder since she left, but the rewards are great, and her time there left Elizabeth with some vivid memories which she will share with us in this talk.

48) QUESTIONABLE: African History in the British School Curriculum – Roundtable Discussion

African history taught in British classrooms today centres on slavery, and the humanitarian aid that western countries send to Africa – the typical ‘single story’ of Africa. When the teaching of African history within the context of Black history begins and end with slavery, it ignores the humanity of black people. In light of this, the National Institute for African Studies (NIAS) is organising a debate & round table discussion on Weds 19th of April @ 6:30pm, where the consequences of the current approaches to teaching African history within British school curriculum will be discussed.

“To address the limited nature of African/Black history taught within British schools. NIAS is proposing to commission a five series booklet, detailing the roles and accounts of five specific ancient African civilisations – prior to contact with the Atlantic slave trade and European colonisation accounts. 43) Legacies of Biafra : Reflections on the Nigeria-Biafra War 50 years on

The conference will be attended by survivors of the Biafra War, local stakeholders from across Nigeria and West Africa and international experts and academics. The conference will facilitate discussions around the conditions that led to the outbreak of war, whilst also creating a space to reflect and consider lessons that can be learnt from this period in recent history.

45) Tracing Black Ancestry: Secrets of the 1817 Slave Registers Uncovered

Come and ask questions about how to start exploring family history! Paul Crooks was told that it would be impossible to trace records of slave-ownership let alone his African ancestors enslaved on plantations in Jamaica. “No one had tried because such records did not exist.” In the 1990’s, undeterred, he embarked on a journey of discovery that led from suburban North London to Jamaica and ultimately back to the Gold Coast of Africa; an effort that has brought him international recognition for his breakthroughs in African Caribbean genealogy research.

Set discussion points will be based around the importance of self love and self care, beauty and redefining the Black woman’s image, and we’ll also be encouraging all of our Sisters in attendance to spill the tea on personal experiences of Black Girl Excellence.

The aim of the event is to:

Showcase and connect Black cultural and creative entrepreneurs to the community
Increase the exposure of Black cultural and creative sector’s participation in the wider community
To provide a platform to sell their products, promote their skills and engage with the local and surrounding community.
To raise the awareness of the importance and relevance of increasing your personal financial literacy and the benefits of developing and adopting an enterprising lifestyle.

We will have stalls Showcasing African Arts & Crafts, Jewellery, Fashion, Skincare, Hair Care, Food, Books, DVDs, Toys & more! There will be educational and interactive presentation on Financial Literacy and film screenings for all the family. There will also be children activities by S.T.E.A.M Power who use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) led activities that help to raise children’s aspirations and cognitive abilities. For the first time ever, our event is sponsored by the award winning Colourful Radio.

“This session will have a very brief look at the art of woodcut, how to prepare an image, cut your plates and print your work. You will create a small edition of two colour woodcut prints to take home with you at the end of the day.
