The book selection for this month is The Loney Londoners by Sam Selvon and here is a short descrption of the book

“Both devastating and funny, The Lonely Londoners is an unforgettable account of immigrant experience – and one of the great twentieth-century London novels. This Penguin Modern Classics edition includes an introduction by Susheila Nasta.

At Waterloo Station, hopeful new arrivals from the West Indies step off the boat train, ready to start afresh in 1950s London. There, homesick Moses Aloetta, who has already lived in the city for years, meets Henry ‘Sir Galahad’ Oliver and shows him the ropes. In this strange, cold and foggy city where the natives can be less than friendly at the sight of a black face, has Galahad met his Waterloo? But the irrepressible newcomer cannot be cast down. He and all the other lonely new Londoners – from shiftless Cap to Tolroy, whose family has descended on him from Jamaica – must try to create a new life for themselves. As pessimistic ‘old veteran’ Moses watches their attempts, they gradually learn to survive and come to love the heady excitements of London”.

20) KEMTIYU SEEX ANTA – CHEIKH ANTA

https-cdn-evbuc-com-images-26793009-9415511427-1-original

Date: Fri 3 Feb | Time: 18:00 – 21:00pm | Venue: Birkbeck Cinema, 43 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PD | Eventbrite: here

Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image (BIMI) is a response to the growing interest in film and the moving image across the College. This event; a film is a ‘portrait’ of Cheikh Anta Diop, author of Nations Nègres et Culture (1954), a significant but also controversial figure in Senegal and in philosophical circles for the views he espoused on Africa, African civilisations, and the origins of humanity. The film tells the story of a man who fought his whole life for truth and justice in order to restore historical awareness and dignity to Africa. Born in 1923 in a village in Senegal, he developed a passion for science and African history at a very early age. He studied philosophy, then physics, chemistry, history, linguistics, and anthropology in Paris in 1947. His professors were Gaston Bachelard, Marcel Griaule and Frédéric Joliot-Curie. In 1954, he published “Nations Nègres et Culture”, a cult book which revolutionized the view of the origin of civilizations by declaring that Africa is the cradle of humanity, and the Pharaohs of Egypt were Negro.

Contradicting the Egyptologists cost him dearly his whole life. After completing his doctorate, he returned to Senegal in 1960 at the time of independence, and clashed with Léopold Sédar Senghor who banned him from teaching at the university. Then, with the support of Théodore Monod, Cheikh Anta built his own carbon dating laboratory in Dakar. He was convinced that Africa’s development would come about through scientific learning, the protection of its national languages, and the federation of the United States of Africa.

Join Control Risks and The Business Council for Africa for a joint breakfast briefing in London, as part of Control Risks’ RiskMap 2017 event series, to discuss the risks and opportunities for businesses operating and investing in Africa in the year ahead.

Looking back on 2016, the year has generated more questions than certainty for global businesses, presenting real challenges for strategic decision-making in 2017. For businesses operating and investing in Africa in particular, this uncertainty will persist locally on the continent as macro-economic factors – including a low oil price and global economic sentiment – drive African nations to re-invent themselves in the hope of becoming Dubai or Singapore style commercial hubs. While this offers great opportunity, equally it will be accompanied by unknown threats to business that should not be underestimated.

Afristoricals host seminars that brings people up to date with the facts of human, African and world history – from a truthful perspective, based on evidence, while providing a platform to network with like-minded people.

afriMonologues addresses the false impressions which have traditionally been attributed to Africa. “History”, as we know it today, suggests the only contributions Africans played was the role of slaves and poverty stricken souls unable to survive without the aid of their enforced enslavement and colonialism.

Despite the colossal scale of evidence uncovered and reported by European anthropologists, these same scientists have consistently denounced the relevance, or even the existence, of Black History or the evolution of civilization by Africans, preferring to follow the common misconception that has only evolved over the past 200 years – that Africans played no part in the development of civilisation.

Black, what a strange term, an identifier that focuses solely on colour but says nothing of it’s historical roots. A colour that has been easy to appropriate into something trendy, something to boast about, or as Lionel Higgins put it “a lifestyle standard made of assumptions about black identity” that’s used by marketers, studio heads, fashion brands and music labels to make money” (Simien, 2014). To be black means to act according to a set of norms determined by middle aged Caucasians from the land of the not so free, from the corporate machines who apply the mechanisms of globalisation?

Join the Centre Pan-African Thought for another intriguing debate, and determine as this house would submit, we do away with this commercialised subculture filled with an artificial knowledge of self?

Abdulrazak Gurnah’s novels – including Memories of Departure(1987), Pilgrims Way (1988), Dottie (1990), Paradise (1994), Admiring Silence (1996), By the Sea (2001), Desertion (2005) and The Last Gift (2011) – chronicle the multiple forms of exclusion and inclusion, dispossession and emplacement, that characterise the movement of people today and in the past. Grounded in a postcolonial critique, and attentive to diverse processes of Othering across time and space, Abdulrazak Gurnah’s writing is acutely pertinent to questions we face today around refuge, asylum, and the hospitality/hostility that refugees and migrants encounter throughout their journeys.

Abdulrazak Gurnah will read selected extracts from his novels, and will discuss the roles of narration and literary criticism in the context of migration and displacement from, within and to East Africa and Europe.

Title: Lagos Girl Power: Performing Postfeminism in Nigeria

Abstract: This paper draws from a research project on class-privileged young women in Lagos who dress in a ‘spectacularly feminine style’ characterised by the extravagant use of normatively feminine elements including cascading hair extensions, long and brightly painted acrylic nails, heavy and immaculate make-up, and false eyelashes. It shows how the women see themselves as performing a new, ‘empowered’ femininity, and makes a case for the analytical and political value of understanding their practices of self in terms of ‘postfeminism.’

Bio: Simidele Dosekun is a lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex. She is currently working on a book manuscript on new styles of feminine dress and subjectivity among class-privileged young women in Lagos, Nigeria.

This talk shows how the Ethiopian church has developed a unique and distinctive tradition of faith. There’s a shared cultural relationship with Judaism, shown in the keeping of many of the laws of the Old Testament; a long history of co-existence with Islam; a style of church building and liturgy centred on the presence of the holy at the heart of the churches, often carved out of rock; a theological tradition passed on through the generation by oral methods of education; and a network of monasteries across the country.

History”, as we know it today, suggests the only contributions Africans played was the role of slaves and poverty stricken souls unable to survive without the aid of their enforced enslavement and colonialism.

The concept of “race” is a European invention, yet when it comes to identifying the ethnicity of the first humans and civilizations, European scientists and institutions claim not to recognise “race” and attribute the founders of ancient civilizations and the first humans to non-Africans, when the evidence clearly shows that these original founders were African.

Following Tanzanian independence in 1961, and especially during the period after the announcement of its intention to follow an independent path of African socialism after the Arusha Declaration in 1967, Julius Nyerere challenged the geopolitics of colonialism and the Cold War. Nyerere – and those he inspired – sought a voice for those previously marginalised from the imaginings of the world order, and proposed an alternative geographical imagination of a united Africa and an alliance of the poor. In this lecture, Professor Sharp will explore the challenge of bringing subaltern imaginations into academic and (geo)political practice during this period.
