Michael Twitty, author of The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African-American Culinary History in the Old South, will be giving a talk, “Dining From A Haunted Plate: Food, Memory, Writing and Creativity from the African American South” to the Historical Fictions Research Network in collaboration with the National Maritime Museum. We are delighted to be able to open this talk to the general public.
Michael Twitty authors the foodblog Afroculinaria. He is a food writer, independent scholar and culinary historian who aims to prepare and preserve African American food ways and address food’s critical role in the development and definition of African American civilization and the politics of consumption and cultural ownership that surround it. He is also a Judaic studies taeacher with interests in Jewish cultural and food issues.

To support young people’s self-development and psychological issues that affect them. As well as providing presentations, seminars, self-development /educational workshops.
The purpose of the event is to bring together the African family to partake in the discussions with the guest speakers, panel members, groups activities and networking with various organizations that can offer support. A part of LGBT History Month, the University of Hertfordshire will be screening the New Black, a documentary that tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia.

In the most part developed in ballrooms across the USA – most notably The Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York. It’s popularity peaked in the mid-1940s and was featured often as a speciality act in many Hollywood movies such as Hellzapoppin’. Despite a musical shift after WW2, the Lindy Hop continued to be enjoyed socially throughout the US, UK and other countries. Notable dancers: George Snowdon, Norma Miller and Frankie Manning.

Abdulrazak Gurnah’s novels – including Memories of Departure(1987), Pilgrims Way (1988), Dottie (1990), Paradise (1994), Admiring Silence (1996), By the Sea (2001), Desertion (2005) and The Last Gift (2011) – chronicle the multiple forms of exclusion and inclusion, dispossession and emplacement, that characterise the movement of people today and in the past. Grounded in a postcolonial critique, and attentive to diverse processes of Othering across time and space, Abdulrazak Gurnah’s writing is acutely pertinent to questions we face today around refuge, asylum, and the hospitality/hostility that refugees and migrants encounter throughout their journeys.
Abdulrazak Gurnah will read selected extracts from his novels, and will discuss the roles of narration and literary criticism in the context of migration and displacement from, within and to East Africa and Europe.

Title: Lagos Girl Power: Performing Postfeminism in Nigeria
Abstract: This paper draws from a research project on class-privileged young women in Lagos who dress in a ‘spectacularly feminine style’ characterised by the extravagant use of normatively feminine elements including cascading hair extensions, long and brightly painted acrylic nails, heavy and immaculate make-up, and false eyelashes. It shows how the women see themselves as performing a new, ‘empowered’ femininity, and makes a case for the analytical and political value of understanding their practices of self in terms of ‘postfeminism.’
Bio: Simidele Dosekun is a lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex. She is currently working on a book manuscript on new styles of feminine dress and subjectivity among class-privileged young women in Lagos, Nigeria.

This talk shows how the Ethiopian church has developed a unique and distinctive tradition of faith. There’s a shared cultural relationship with Judaism, shown in the keeping of many of the laws of the Old Testament; a long history of co-existence with Islam; a style of church building and liturgy centred on the presence of the holy at the heart of the churches, often carved out of rock; a theological tradition passed on through the generation by oral methods of education; and a network of monasteries across the country.

Following Tanzanian independence in 1961, and especially during the period after the announcement of its intention to follow an independent path of African socialism after the Arusha Declaration in 1967, Julius Nyerere challenged the geopolitics of colonialism and the Cold War. Nyerere – and those he inspired – sought a voice for those previously marginalised from the imaginings of the world order, and proposed an alternative geographical imagination of a united Africa and an alliance of the poor. In this lecture, Professor Sharp will explore the challenge of bringing subaltern imaginations into academic and (geo)political practice during this period.
